Russia slapped with hundreds of new sanctions

Russia just got slapped with a new round of sweeping sanctions.

Today, the United States imposed sanctions on over 500 people and entities in response to the war in Ukraine and the recent death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The move is being done in partnership with the UK and EU.

The targets include Russia’s Mir payment system, financial institutions, and its military-industrial base, among others. The Western nations also hit prison officials the U.S. says are linked to Navalny’s death.

President Joe Biden says the sanctions are meant to ensure Russian President Vladimir Putin “pays an even steeper price for his aggression abroad and repression at home.”

The U.S. and its allies have imposed sanctions on thousands of Russian targets in the past two years.
