On Monday, seven people died after Russia sent more than 200 missiles and drones into Ukraine.
Officials in Kyiv claimed that the attack struck nationwide as part of a Russian effort to cripple Ukrainian infrastructure. The bombardment reportedly targeted key energy and water supplies, leaving many without power or drinkable water.
The attack is believed to be part of an effort by Russia to destroy Ukrainian energy before winter when electricity and heating are needed the most. Among the areas targeted included gas and power stations.
According to officials, the Ukrainian air force destroyed 102 of 127 incoming missiles and 99 of 109 drones.
Ukrainian air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said in a social media post that the attack was “the most massive” of the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement that the attack caused “a lot of damage in the energy sector,” and promised that Ukraine would retaliate.
US President Joe Biden condemned the Russian attack, saying in a statement that it was “outrageous.”
