Russia vetoes US-backed resolution against space nukes

Russia went toe-to-toe with the U.S. at the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, this tim over nuclear arms in outer space.

A U.S.-drafted resolution called on countries to prevent such an arms race from happening, but it was vetoed by Russia. The only other nation that did not support the measure was China, which abstained.

The vote came after Washington accused Moscow of developing an anti-satellite nuclear weapon to put in space, which Russia denies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow was against putting nuclear weapons in space. But the veto prompted the U.S. to question if Moscow was hiding something.

Russia’s U.N. Ambassador accused Washington of trying to tarnish Moscow and said Russia would shortly begin negotiations on its own draft resolution.
