Russian opposition leader Navalny dies in prison

The long-persecuted political opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin is now dead, a prison reports.

Lawyers spoke with Alexei Nalvany on Wednesday and he “appeared fine” in a court appearance on Thursday. But the Russian prison service said that the 47-year-old collapsed after a walk earlier today. Emergency medics later confirmed his death.

Nalvany opposed corruption in Putin’s government, accused the Kremlin of multiple poisoning attempts, and led multiple nationwide protests. He was serving a 30-and-a-half-years-long sentence on charges of fraud and extremism. And even in prison, he criticized the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken blamed the Kremlin earlier today. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says, “Russia has serious questions to answer.”

The majority of Putin’s opposition is either jailed or deceased, essentially guaranteeing his reelection in March.
