The Justice Department announced charges yesterday relating to the second assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
Suspect Ryan Routh was indicted on five felony counts, including the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer, in addition to gun charges. If convicted he faces up to life in prison.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said the assassination attempt “endangers everything our country stands for.” Likewise, FBI Director Chris Wray said the incident “strikes at the very heart of our democratic system.”
The charges come the same day that the suspect’s son – Oran Routh – was arrested on child pornography charges. Federal investigators discovered hundreds of disturbing files while searching his phone in connection to a separate investigation.
