NBC’s Saturday Night Live has been one of the most-watched late night comedy shows in the last several decades. But last week, the comedy show reached a new level of tasteless content and inappropriate joking with a sketch about abortion.
To highlight the discussion around the highly publicized Texas abortion law which bans pre-birth infanticide at six weeks in a pregnancy, the far left-leaning SNL sketch featured a character on the show, “Goober the Clown,” played by comedian Cecily Strong. The clown quips about the abortion she supposedly had at 23, satirically highlighting the left’s desire for abortion to be “safe, legal, and accessible.”
For several reasons, including the vulgarity of content and brief foul language, the clip has not been included in this article.
Strong, acting as the clown, said,
I wish I didn’t have to do this, cuz the abortion I had at 23 is my personal clown business, but that’s all some people in this country wanna discuss all the time! Did you know that one in three clowns will have a clown abortion in their lifetime? Here’s my truth: I know I wouldn’t be a clown on TV here today if it weren’t for the abortion I had the day before my 23rd birthday. Clowns have been helping each other and their pregnancies since the caves. It’s going to happen, so it might as well be safe, legal, and accessible.
Predictably, the skit generated big applause from both the live studio audience and countless journalists and media personnel, calling it a necessary spotlight on states passing “anti-choice” laws.
It is telling of a culture when something so horrid as the intentional murder of children is not only celebrated, but used as content for course joking. The one place that should be the safest for a baby, his mother’s womb, has become the most dangerous. This is perhaps all the more reason why Christians need to pray against this darkness.
Let us also remind ourselves, as we read about a culture that hates unborn children in such a perverse way, of God’s great love for the little ones. God, who knew every one of the hundreds of thousands of children aborted in this country in the last year, still loves them. We can take joy and be confident that those little ones are now safe with their loving heavenly Father in glory.
