In some bizarre news, a secret underground tunnel was discovered under a historic Brooklyn synagogue this past week.
The tunnel, under the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters, stretches 60 feet and is 8 feet wide and 5 feet deep. It extends under several buildings in the area. One of the rabbis characterized the project as a rogue act of vandalism committed by misguided young men.
When the tunnel was discovered and sealed off on Monday, supporters of the tunnel staged a protest that then turned violent. Police arrested nine of the young men.
Now the buildings above the tunnel are being partially vacated for safety reasons. Emergency work orders have since been issued to stabilize the buildings.
A flurry of rumors surrounding the tunnel have been circulating online, including that it was used for human trafficking. Those claims remain unfounded.
