Senate Republicans block contraceptive accessibility bill

The GOP senate blocked a Democrat-backed bill intended to enshrine birth control access into federal law.

You may remember we mentioned yesterday that the Democrats introduced a bill that would’ve protected unlimited access to all forms of birth control, including abortion pills. The Senate voted against it 51-39.

GOP senators said it’s nothing more than political messaging. They added it’s also unnecessary and overly broad.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn (Texas) said that the bill is a “huge overreach” and a “phony vote” because contraception is not illegal or unavailable.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also voted against the bill last minute so that his party could have the chance to bring it up again in the future.
