Slovakian PM hospitalized after assassination attempt

Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister, Robert Fico, is in the hospital today recovering from an assassination attempt that left him fighting for his life.

A gunman shot Fico several times yesterday afternoon in what Slovakia’s politicians are calling an “attack on democracy.” He was later flown to a hospital where he underwent five hours of surgery. He’s now in serious, but stable condition.

The gunman was quickly apprehended, but the suspect’s identity has yet to be officially confirmed. Reports suggest he’s a 71-year-old man who had taken part in previous anti-government protests. Officials say the attack was politically motivated.
