Speaker Johnson sides with Trump in leaving abortion up to states

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) recently defended his decision to avoid passing a nationwide abortion ban should Republicans keep control of the House this November.

In an interview with Politico published on Friday, Johnson said he’s a “lifelong pro-lifer,” but at the same time said he agrees with former President Donald Trump in leaving the issue to the states. Johnson said:

I believe in the sanctity of human life. It’s also an important article of faith for me. But I have 434 colleagues here. All of us have our own, philosophical principles that we live by, but you have to have a political consensus.

This follows comments from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who said he wouldn’t get enough votes in the Senate to pass a nationwide ban.
