Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has come out strongly against the Senate’s foreign aid bill, a $95 billion package that passed 70-29 this morning.
The bill includes $60 billion for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel but nothing for the border after Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan border bill last week. Johnson is likely to block the bill and said in a statement, “The Senate’s foreign aid bill is silent on the most pressing issue facing our country.”
For months now, Johnson has made Ukraine funding contingent on border security.
House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) says Democrats will use every legislative tool available to get the bill across the finish line. But it will be an uphill battle as it needs the support of half a dozen Republicans to pass, a result even moderates say is doubtful.
