Student debt forgiveness garners low ratings

Support for student loan forgiveness is waning even among those with debt.

According to a new UChicago Harris/AP-NORC Poll, only 39% of respondents say student loan debt forgiveness is essential. Only 30% of adults approve of how the Biden administration has handled student loan forgiveness.

But the criticism isn’t only for the president. Democrats, Republicans, and the Supreme Court got equally low ratings. However, 54% of respondents were more likely to support student loan forgiveness for those who have been misled by schools or were deemed victims of fraud.

This was also true in cases where borrowers were left with a larger amount of debt than their annual income, or if they were experiencing financial hardship.

Roughly half of the respondents said they would rather the government forgive medical debt instead of student loan debt.
