Arizona can now enforce proof of citizenship during voter registration.
The state measure was created in 2022 but was never put into practice. The Supreme Court partially granted the Republican National Committee’s request to approve the legislation in a narrow 5-4 vote.
Conservative justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch said they would’ve approved the law as a whole, however, the court is keeping separate provisions on hold that were challenged by the Biden administration.
NBC News reports that more than 40,000 people have registered to vote in Arizona without proof of citizenship, although most of these people aren’t active voters.
Reportedly, only a small number of people will be affected by the court ruling.
