Tens of thousands in Armenia protest border village handover

Tens of thousands of Armenian protestors are calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The outrage comes as Armenia handed over several of its border villages to Azerbaijan last month. The police arrested 196 people as protesters blocked the main streets in the capital city earlier this week.

The demonstration was part of a larger movement initially led by a high-ranking cleric at the Armenian Apostolic Church. Since then, the movement has snowballed into a larger political effort against the prime minister and his government.

Upon the prime minister’s request, Russian peacekeepers have left the Karabakh region, which Azerbaijan took by force last year.

The prime minister has advocated for a quick resolution to Armenia’s border issues to avoid further conflict with Azerbaijan.
