Texas governor Greg Abbot is pushing back in the battle for the moral protection of children with a push to legally define gender transactions in children as child abuse.

On Tuesday, Abbot penned a letter to the Department of Family and Protective Services calling state professionals to define criminalize the practice of administering sex changes on children.

The governor’s letter said, in part,

Texas law imposes reporting requirements upon all licensed professionals who have direct contact with children who may be subject to such abuse, including doctors, nurses, and teachers, and provides criminal penalties for failure to report such child abuse.

The letter comes on the heels of the words of Texas AG Ken Paxton, who spearheaded the idea of labeling child sex changes as abuse of minors. Paxton made sure to clarify that this push is not meant to nullify the need for legitimate medical concerns, since gender reassignment does not qualify as “medically necessary procedures.”

In no surprising fashion, those on the left have decried the governor’s push, claiming it unnecessarily criminalizes parents who support their child’s gender reassignment. Travis County Attorney Delia Garza said,

The Republican leadership of this state is trying to turn loving and supportive parents into criminals, and this office will play no part in it.

Other groups have criticized this move. Still, others support the move and the protection it will provide for children. Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, said,

Children cannot consent to taking drugs and undergoing surgeries that can permanently sterilize them and radically alter the course of their lives. And any person who assists or encourages minors in pursuing these ends is committing child abuse, period.
