Thousands of Russians attend Navalny’s funeral

Thousands of mourners gathered in Moscow earlier today to pay their respects to former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Nalvany’s parents attended his funeral but his widow, Yulia Navalnaya, was not present over concerns that it would encourage a police crackdown. She instead posted a video celebrating her late husband captioned, “I don’t know how to live without you but I will try to make you proud of me.” His widow has vowed to continue his work.

Hundreds of civilians later escorted Nalvany’s body to his final resting place. While walking, the crowds chanted “we won’t forget” and “no to war.” Police reportedly arrested one person and detained 22 others.

The Kremlin has warned that anybody who participates in unauthorized memorials for Putin’s former foe will be prosecuted.
