Tropical Storm Henri made landfall in Rhode Island at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Sunday. The storm had been traveling up the East Coast over the past several days, though there was much uncertainty of where exactly it would hit until right before the epicenter landed in the small New England state.

While out at sea the storm had briefly become a hurricane with sustained winds of 70 miles per hour but by the time it came ashore the sustained gusts had dropped to 50 miles per hour, downgrading it again to a tropical storm. Despite its status, Henri brought torrential rains to the region which resulted in wide spread flooding throughout the coastal Northeast.

The storm has impacted areas from Rhode Island to Connecticut to New York. In addition to the extensive flooding, many people have lost power. At least 72,000 homes in Rhode Island have lost power with 110,000 total homes being affected in the southern New England region. The storm also had a substantial impact on New York City due to a record amount of rain, with 4.45 inches covering the Big Apple in 24 hours.

The star studded “Homecoming Concert” that was being held in Central Park over this past weekend was completely rained out due to Henri as well. The concert was free and had been designed as a way for New York City to celebrate the end to the COVID-19 pandemic. NYC governor Bill de Blasio had promoted the concert extensively via social media and a large number of attendees did show up. However, once it started raining the crowd thinned extensively and the event was ultimately canceled without the majority of headline bands having taken the stage.
