Donald Trump’s campaign said on Saturday that it was hacked after internal documents were leaked to the press.
The campaign said that “hostile” foreign actors from Iran were behind the hack, citing a Microsoft report. A statement on Trump’s Truth Social reads: “They were only able to get publicly available information but, nevertheless, they shouldn’t be doing anything of this nature.”
The hackers reportedly broke into the account of a ‘high-ranking official’ in the Trump campaign back in June. From there, Politico began receiving emails from an anonymous account that included publicly available documents. Those emails were part of a “spear phishing” campaign from the Iranian hackers, according to Trump’s team.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said that the hack was “intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process.”
