GOP lawmakers are seeking to hold the White House accountable after discovering that the United States has sent over a billion dollars to China and Russia over the last five years.
Open the Books CEO Adam Andrzejewski says this is unacceptable.
The oversight organization found over a million dollars went to Chinese agricultural exporters, when it was meant for domestic agricultural producers. Another 6 million dollars meant for Department of Defense infrastructure instead went to a Chinese IT contractor. Even more went to Russia – over $4 billion has gone to the Russian space program since 2005. But Open the Books believes these numbers are only the tip of the iceberg.
Now, Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.) are introducing legislation calling for more transparency on taxpayer money going overseas.
