Yesterday, the United Arab Emirates accepted a Taliban ambassador from Afghanistan, making them only the second country to do so.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry in Afghanistan confirmed earlier this week that the UAE had accepted its new ambassador, Badruddin Haqqani.
In December of last year, China became the first country to accept an ambassador from the Taliban government. The UAE’s decision comes as it increases its economic ties with Afghanistan. In 2022, the country won rights to operate at Kabul’s international airport.
Although neither China nor the UAE have made any official statements recognizing the Taliban government, the move is supposedly part of an effort to increase diplomatic relations.
Other nations, including the United States, have said that they will refuse to recognize the Taliban government until they improve women’s rights in the country.
