UN attacks Biden’s asylum changes as rights groups sue

The UN is attacking President Joe Biden’s new asylum restrictions.

The head of the UN Refugee Agency is criticizing Biden’s border policy, saying it might violate international humanitarian law. Under Biden’s new policy, illegal immigrants are barred from claiming asylum between ports of entry when encounters reach 2,500 per day.

The UN says the policy undermines “the fundamental right to seek asylum.” But it’s not just the UN. This week, immigrant rights groups filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration over the policy. The suit is being led by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The plaintiffs argue that Biden failed to follow proper regulatory procedure when establishing the new rules, citing Trump-era border policies that were overturned for similar reasons.
