US, other countries demand Hamas release all hostages

More than a dozen countries are calling on Hamas to release their remaining 129 hostages as a means of ending the war in Gaza.

Eighteen countries, including the US, released a statement yesterday, saying, “We call for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas in Gaza now for over 200 days.” The 18 countries all have citizens held by Hamas , other signatories include Austria, Brazil, France and Britain.

They went on to say that a hostage release “would bring an immediate and prolonged ceasefire in Gaza… and lead to the credible end of hostilities.” But it doesn’t look like Hamas was swayed. A senior Hamas leader told Reuters that the group would not be influenced by the statement.

It remains unclear that a release of the hostages would end the war, as Israel says it won’t stop until Hamas is destroyed.
