US Navy accelerates warfare target to 2027, cites rising tensions in Indo-Pacific

The Naval Institute published a new report detailing the Navy’s vision for warfare with a target date of 2027.

Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti announced her “Project 33” plan last week,  which she says is an accelerated model for readiness in the next three years.

Some of the targets include scaling “robotic and autonomous systems to integrate more platforms at speed,” creating “command centers the fleets need to win on a distributed battlefield,” recruiting and retaining navy force, and training for combat both in the physical and virtual world.

Franchetti concluded, “Project 33 sets new targets but we do not need new levers to reach them…We will deliver results using the tools and resources we have to gain ground without losing speed.”

The news comes as tensions continue to heat up in the South China Sea.
