US vetoes UN resolution recognizing Gaza statehood

The U.S. vetoed a draft U.N. Security Council resolution yesterday that would have recognized Gaza’s Statehood.

Twelve of the council’s 15 members voted in favor of the resolution, while Britain and Switzerland abstained. Prior to the vote, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said a two-state solution is the only way to achieve lasting peace in the region.

Israel condemned the 12 members who voted in favor of the resolution, saying their votes will embolden radical Palestinians. A State Department spokesman said the U.S. believes that the best path for statehood for the Palestinians “is through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.”
