US Women’s Soccer Team Lets Gold Medal Slip Away

After a controversial 2020 Olympics, the US Women’s Soccer Team has officially been eliminated from winning the gold medal.  The USWNT was heavily favored to win gold, but on Monday Canada beat the United States in the semifinal round 1-0 to advance to the gold medal game in Tokyo.

Certainly, the USWNT’s disappointing finish will be a downer for some, but many Americans see it as poetic justice after their starters took a knee during the national anthem before an embarrassing 3-0 loss in the opening round to Sweden. In the semifinal round, Team USA could not score a single goal and lost in heartbreaking fashion to their North American rivals on a penalty kick during the 75th minute.

Team USA still has a chance to get on the podium as they will play the loser of the Australia vs. Sweden matchup for the bronze medal. Canada will take on the winner of that game in the gold medal final.
