At this point, there really should be a saying along the lines of “Another day, another bit of January 6 footage.”
News outlets yesterday shared clips of recently obtained footage from the 2021 riot, specifically from the perspective of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The video footage was captured by her daughter, Alexandra, who is putting together a documentary on the day for HBO.
Some bits of the footage show how angry Pelosi was at how everything played out, expressing that Trump should “pay a price” for the January 6 riot.
Another bit of footage shows Pelosi en route to the Capitol to make a statement following the riot. Planning her speech with some of her staffers, Pelosi opts to focus on Trump instead of calling for the resignation of Congressional security officials.
But other footage from this trove is getting particular attention from Republicans and conservatives. In one clip that was unveiled a few months ago, Pelosi expresses frustration with the lack of National Guard presence and even admits to some “responsibility” on the matter.
But another, newer clip shows her walking with her security and staff through a tunnel under the Capitol. Here, she expresses similar regret saying the National Guard “should” have been present from the start.
Days before the 2021 riot, then-President Donald Trump reportedly offered the National Guard to be deployed by Congress as an extra means of security. Then-Speaker Pelosi reportedly refused that offer. Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung told Newsweek that these clips further prove that Pelosi was responsible for the security failures that day.
The latter clip was only unveiled after the documentary was turned over to the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee, helmed by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.). It also comes as the first rioter to enter the U.S. Capitol was sentenced this past Tuesday to four years and five months in prison.
