Violence against Christians in India escalates

The Evangelical Fellowship of India reports a concerning surge in attacks against Christians in the country. The 2023 report shows a 45% increase in violence against believers, going from 413 cases to 601 cases.

The organization said that despite religious protections in India, “the rise of divisive rhetoric and inflammatory language, often condoned or inadequately addressed by official channels, has emboldened sections of society to perpetrate acts of violence and discrimination against religious minorities, particularly Christians and Muslims.”

The northern state of Uttar Pradesh stands out with 275 incidents. There, the government is known for arresting pastors and Christians based on alleged “forced conversions” despite little or no evidence.

The report comes as more and more states in the country are enacting laws that block evangelism efforts in what is seen as a rise in Hindu nationalism.
