Vice President Harris is seeking to end the filibuster to codify Roe v Wade.
Harris told a Wisconsin public radio station yesterday that she supports eliminating the filibuster to secure Roe. She reasoned that “51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom.”
West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin said he would not endorse Harris following her comment. He said, “She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy. It’s the only thing that keeps us talking and working together.”
Proving Manchin’s point, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton Ark.) shared a 2017 filibuster agreement on X, with the signature of Kamala Harris supporting it. The document stated that keeping the filibuster is essential to ensure the Senate “continues to serve as the world’s greatest deliberative body.”
But Harris is not alone in wanting to eliminate the filibuster for Roe. President Joe Biden and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi have also previously endorsed the notion.
