White House does damage control after Biden calls Japan ‘xenophobic’

by ian

President Joe Biden is taking flak for recent comments about Japan in which he called the US ally xenophobic. During a campaign reception on Wednesday, Biden lumped Japan together with China, India and Russia saying their economies are suffering because they “don’t want immigrants.”

Biden compared Japan’s economy to America’s, which he said is “growing” because of immigration. Following blowback for criticizing an American ally, the White House tried to soften Biden’s comments.

The criticism comes at an odd time for the president. A few weeks ago, he hosted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in DC, where he said the American-Japanese alliance is stronger than it’s ever been.
