President Joe Biden met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida this morning to express shared concern over the growing threat of Chinese presence in the Pacific. Biden reaffirmed America’s continued partnership with Japan.

Biden also praised the positive relationship between the two countries and their economies.

Likewise, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida reassured the U.S. of its continued friendship and support in his remarks. But the visit also comes amid Japan’s plans to purchase the iconic U.S. Steel company. President Biden has opposed the Japanese takeover, saying the U.S. needs to “maintain strong American steel companies powered by American steelworkers.”
