White House walks back Biden’s remarks on aid for Israel

The White House appears to be walking back recent comments by President Joe Biden about setting conditions for future aid to Israel, calling the idea last week a “worthwhile thought.”

It’s the first time a president has suggested putting restrictions on aid to Israel and is a stark reversal for Biden who, in 2019, called the idea “absolutely outrageous.” But it remains unlikely to happen. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan tried to gloss over the comment earlier this week.

Others directly walked back Biden’s remarks. One anonymous White House official told Politico conditions to aid is not something the administration is currently pursuing.
